Based on the Global Status Report, buildings and construction together account for 36% of global final energy use and 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when upstream power generation is included. Recent procurement requirements for carbon reduction in infrastructure projects require that bidders take into account both the carbon emissions associated with the selection of machinery/processes and the embodied carbon of materials and geomaterials during the Bidding Stage, as part of a Full Lifecycle Assessment. Use of an Embodied Carbon Calculator (EC3) within ProjectVIEW ERP will assist in selecting materials and associated processes by calculating the CO2 emissions linked to the production, manufacturing, assembly, and ultimate disposal of each material. ProjectVIEW ERP v.12 will include an embodied materials carbon calculator and a process carbon estimator. This will enable the calculation of the percentage reduction in the carbon footprint for each project, providing metrics for overall cost and environmental efficiency. This new feature will help ensure compliance with most upcoming tendering terms solicited from international organizations and governments. The future of Construction is ZERO CARBON.
